Community Interactive Applied Art & Culture History in Rural Cyprus.

In the mountainous area of Larnaca District, ancient crafts are still alive and with ‘Green Village’ thinking the Community Council of Kato Drys (“lower oaks”) are making local goods for sale that have true sense of place. All the products and processes are scored from 1 to 10 for each of the 4 pillars of cultural, social, environmental and economic sustainability and MUST score no less than 25/40. The week long structured course will focus on the culture history of the Lefkara Region, Prehistoric & Roman Cyprus, Nicosia, and on the completion of a mural for Kato Drys and mosaic skills.

Arrive to Paphos airport and transfer to Aloni House in Pano Lefkara, where you stay for the week. There is a swimming pool, bring gear, don’t forget sun-cream, a hat and insect repellent. It will still get hot in the day time…. 30+ degrees ! There will be a chance to swim in the sea some evenings.

After breakfast, walk down through the village famous for its lace and crafts with Panayiota Demetriou. You will visit the restoration work on town squares including murals and mosaics. The group will then prepare the mural design based on upscaled lace patterns.

Preparation of the wall for the mural (removal of old render and application of new base coat), then visit to the museums of Kato Drys.

Creation of a community mural with a range of paints in Kato Drys.

Participants will create a personal mosaic with Panayiota Demetriou which will be displayed locally.

Visit to Nicosia National Archaeological Museum, crossing the Green Line into North Nicosia with visits to cultural sites on both sides of the city and lunch at the famous Buyuk Khan in North Nicosia.

Visit to the Green Village Shop in Lefkara and the Maccharas Forest.

Depart early for Paphos with the possibility to visit Kourion Roman City, the Paphos UNESCO Mosaics or the Roman sites of Paphos. Evening departure for the UK
