Wildflowers, Alpine Landscape Management and Heritage Tourism in the Julian Alps of Slovenia
We are delighted to offer a new course based at the Bohinj International Wildflower Festival in the Julian Alps of Slovenia with our host trainers, Turizem Bohinj.
Turizem Bohinj are experts in green and nature based tourism, sustainable destination management as well as coordinators of cultural heritage and community engagement activities. Learn more about their work here.
The course will explore the use of heritage tourism to help preserve biodiverse, farming landscapes and to support rural hospitality livelihoods. The course will also explore how conservation in Triglav National Park and nature based tourism is integrated with other elements of cultural heritage interpretation and engagement.
Bohinj Lake and the surroundings mountains are home to over a 1000 species of wildflowers and a wide range of birds, mammals and insects. This farming landscape stills maintain wildflower rich meadows, a rich local food culture and a strong community based approach to exploring and sharing their heritage.
The Bohinj International Wildflower Festival is a sustainable tourism success story and is now in its 16th year. Participants will have an opportunity to learn from the organisers and participants about the development of the festival, to learn about the work of rangers and managers in the Triglav National Park, to experience local foods and food production systems, and to visit the cultural heritage of Bohinj and the capital city, Ljubljana.
